Medical Benefits Portal
Transforming a conversion-focused travel platform layout into a clear, trustworthy medical benefits experience.
The Challenge
Healthcare organizations need to communicate a large amount of important information to members in one place: coverage details, family benefits, wellness programs, and available services. Most benefits portals overwhelm users with dense, disorganized content, or bury critical information behind confusing navigation. The challenge was presenting comprehensive health information in a way that feels scannable, trustworthy, and genuinely useful to a person managing their own and their family's care.
The Approach
This design began its life as a travel deals platform layout I had built, structured around presenting varied, high-density promotional information clearly on a single page with strategic upsell placements for partner brands. I recognized that the same underlying structure — clear information hierarchy, card-based content zones, and purposeful visual grouping — could serve a completely different and more meaningful context: helping a person understand what their medical organization can do for their health and their family's health.
I transformed the layout into a medical benefits portal, adapting the visual language from promotional urgency to calm trustworthiness: softer color treatment, clearer typography hierarchy, and content zones reorganized around a member's actual priorities — coverage overview first, family benefits, preventive care, and available services. The partner upsell zones from the travel version became natural spaces for a healthcare organization to surface wellness programs and sister services without feeling like advertising.
Design Decisions
Information hierarchy over decoration
Every content zone answers a real member question: What am I covered for? What about my family? What should I do next?
One-page overview
Members see the full picture of their benefits without hunting through nested navigation, reducing the most common frustration with benefits portals.
Versatile system thinking
The same structural skeleton serves both a high-energy travel context and a calm healthcare context, demonstrating that good information architecture transcends any single industry.
The Outcome
The result is a benefits portal concept that gives members a clear overview of what their medical organization can achieve for their health and their family's — while giving the organization natural, non-intrusive space to surface additional wellness services. The project demonstrates how a well-structured design system can flex across industries with completely different emotional registers, from vacation excitement to healthcare trust.
